I thought it was odd that no had to pay, but everyone treats it in a way that it's starting to feel normal. Even though it's only been a few weeks . . . Isn't that interesting? Compared to everything else, it feels like this is something most of us can adjust to quickly.

What can I say? I hadn't been feeling the productive vibe until now. Apparently most folks in this town never get it at all.

Who knows? Right now they all make good test subjects because they just sit in here and let things happen to them. Well, okay, it's not exactly avoidable, but there has to be more to it than that, right? Than just waiting around, twiddling our thumbs, getting whatever we want with no effort involved that makes the payoff worth it?

When you put it that way, some of us are very tame, aren't we? But after years of nothing coming around to change the situation, they must be discouraged . . .

It's not the same as having actual money. [Huff.] That's just like being teased with ... with ... some kind of food on a stick. Like in those cartoons.

[That's an odd analogy he can get behind, though Oscar finds that he's more interested in the last mention. Visibly perking up in curiosity, he echos her:]

You know, on the television? They're like drawings that move, except they have voices and strange plots. Xander watched them all the time.

[dissonates]

[Well, she can't that mad if she's changing the subject.]

That's right. I work afternoon shifts. [Well, mostly.]

And that's a service, right? One you're providing to other people, even though they don't give you anything but a headache in return?

[dissonates]

What's your point?

[And his customers aren't that bad...]

Now just think of how better you'd feel if you were compensated for those services. I mean, that way you wouldn't have your coworkers trying to get unsuspecting women to date you.

[dissonates]

[He opens his mouth to respond to that - lets the words properly sink in - and then glowers.

... Okay, that rejection was a little too enthusiastic. And I already said I didn't want to!

And...change is good. [ Yes, it was good. ] Um - can you feel that?

Is it the feeling of change?

It's that...and something else. [ Something reassuring and calming. ] I guess I just have a good feeling about this idea.

You should feel good about it! Change is good. It's the money you get back if you have to spend or exchange a really large bill, which makes it better.

[degleamed]

[ She chuckles. ] I see! Then...I hope I get lots of change.

Good, because I think you deserve it. And we've only just met! I am Anya.

And I'm Rapunzel. It's nice to meet you, Anya. [ She isn't sure why she was so nervous before. She's practically beaming now. It feels great. ]
